Glenbrook is the first town in the mountains when you come up from Sydney, sitting at the top of Lapstone Hill. The climb from the Nepean River is the steepest sustained grade on the whole eastern approach, and the town sits right at the point where it levels out.
Overheating on the Lapstone climb is one of the most predictable failures in the lower mountains, particularly in summer and particularly in anything towing a trailer or carrying a full load. Coming the other way, brake fade on the descent is the mirror image of the same problem.
There are two routes up, and they are very different for a truck. The modern highway is wide and fast; the older Mitchells Pass is narrow, winding and has almost no room to work if a vehicle has stopped on it. Glenbrook Gorge and the national park access roads below the town are narrower again.
